The Holly family has a lot of energy, so we skipped the studio and shot their session outdoors, at their home in Boerne, where that energy actually shows up.

What this family photo session looked like

The kids rode their bikes and played while I gave them light direction, ride your bike toward me, then stepped back and waited for the moment to actually happen.

That's where the real images came from, not posing, staying ready while they did what they'd already be doing anyway.

Along with the action shots, we got the family together too, the same way, without lining anyone up or asking them to hold still and smile.

Why did this session go so smoothly?

Because there was nothing to perform, there was nothing to fail at.

Light direction instead of firm posing meant the kids stayed themselves instead of stiffening up for the camera.

Mom got to relax instead of also managing everyone's behavior on top of her own. Which meant she could actually be in the photos, and that matters more than you’d think.

By the end it didn't feel like a photo session.

It felt like an afternoon that happened to get photographed, which is usually what makes a family want to do it again.

That’s the whole idea behind how I approach portrait sessions.

Does every family need studio portraits?

No. Not everyone is looking for that, and outdoor sessions work especially well for families with younger kids who aren't going to easily sit still for a posed lineup anyway.

Working with what a family actually does, instead of against it, is usually what gets the real images.
